Redmond was established in 1875 with John Johnson as its first bishop and mayor, and it took its name from three red mounds in the grey hills west of town. The Redmond Town Hall became a longtime landmark, with its adobe section, measuring 24 feet by 36 feet, built in 1881 by townspeople who were asked to contribute both labor and money, including boys age twelve and older. After 1891, a two-story rock addition was built onto the front using stone from the quarry east of Redmond, and citizens later carried out extensive renovations. The building first served as a schoolhouse and a church, and over time it was also used as a youth center, a polling place, a hall for family dinners, a senior citizens center, a jail, and the Legion Hall. For years its bell rang half an hour before church and again at the starting time, and it also signaled the beginning of school, emergencies such as fire or a lost child, cleanup day, and the nightly curfew, reflecting much of Redmond’s history.
