Appleford, also called the Parsons-Banks Arboretum, is a twenty-four-acre arboretum and country estate in Villanova, Pennsylvania, where formal gardens coexist with traces of a much older property. Its history begins in 1692 with William Penn’s grant of one hundred acres to James Moore, followed by Robert Jones’s 1728 stone farmhouse, parts of which still remain. The house was expanded over time, and the larger property eventually grew to about eight hundred acres before being divided around 1900. The estate assumed its present form in the 1920s, and Anabel Parsons donated it to Lower Merion Township in 1973.
