Kearsarge North rises on the eastern edge of New Hampshire’s White Mountains near North Conway, overlooking the Mount Washington Valley and drawing hikers by two principal trails. Its brooks feed the Saco River, and its summit has long been tied to both tourism and fire observation. An inn once stood on top but was destroyed twice by storms. In 1909, the Appalachian Mountain Club gave the New Hampshire Forestry Commission use of the ruined hotel site for a fire lookout, and the Pequawket Fire Tower was built there in 1913. The mountain’s modern name, adopted in 1957 after an earlier official designation as Pequawket Mountain, helps distinguish it from Mount Kearsarge in Merrimack County.
