Americans have united across history to serve causes greater than themselves, and the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation presents that service as a reflection of the nation’s duty to honor veterans of the past, military members serving today, and the values to be taught to future generations. Dedicated on November 8, 2008, Faces of Freedom is a sculpture by Mark Greenaway honoring men and women who have served in the American military through a timeline from World War I to the present, including a modern Marine or soldier, a Desert Storm soldier, and a Vietnam veteran, with the American flag and the bald eagle of the Great Seal symbolizing sacrifice, strength, power, and national unity. The work also places local service within a wider history of conflict, from World War I and World War II through Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, and the Global War on Terror, while naming Atascadero veterans who served, were prisoners of war, or gave their lives in peace and war in defense of the United States since 1913.
