Owen County was formed by the General Assembly in 1819, and Spencer was selected as the county seat in 1820. The Neoclassical building, designed by Jesse T. Johnson of Indianapolis and built by Christian Kanzler and Son of Evansville in 1910-1911, was the second courthouse on land donated by Daniel Beem. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
