Wee Thump Joshua Tree Wilderness is a protected area in southern Nevada a few miles west of Searchlight, managed by the Bureau of Land Management and spanning 6,050 acres. It is especially notable for its broad stand of old-growth Joshua trees, which give the landscape much of its character. Designated as wilderness in 2002, it takes its name from the Paiute language, with “Wee Thump” identified as meaning either “ancient ones” or “yucca.” In 2023, it also became part of Avi Kwa Ame National Monument, strengthening protection for this notable part of the Mojave Desert.
