Chambers Covered Bridge in Cottage Grove, Oregon, spans the Coast Fork Willamette River and began in 1925 as a Howe truss railroad bridge hauling logs from the Lorane Valley to the J.H. Chambers Mill near present-day South Highway 99. After the mill was destroyed by a second fire in the 1950s, the tracks were removed, leaving the bridge as a rare remnant of the region’s logging-railroad era. Its greatest distinction is that it is the only remaining fully covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi River. A federal preservation grant in 2008 supported its rehabilitation, and in 2010 it was replaced with an identical structure for pedestrian use.
