Rock Canyon on the east side of Provo, Utah, is a well-known recreation area valued for hiking, climbing, and its strikingly compact geologic record. Its exposed rocks range from Precambrian tillite at the mouth to Paleozoic formations and younger Quaternary deposits, preserving evidence of sedimentation, lithification, thrust-related folding, faulting, and erosion. Features tied to the canyon include Kyhv Peak, Cascade Mountain, the Lake Bonneville shoreline, and the Wasatch Fault. Its recorded history includes the 1850 conflict between Mormon settlers at Fort Utah and the Timpanogos, early Indigenous pictographs, and a mining past marked by shafts, tunnels, and remains such as the Monarch, or Buckley, Mine.
