Moraine State Park in Butler County encompasses 16,725 acres of restored land shaped by glacial deposits and later environmental reclamation, centered on the 3,225-acre Lake Arthur. The area’s history stretches from Native displacement during the Beaver Wars and early English and French presence to George Washington’s travels through the region. After farming, mining, and resource extraction left the landscape badly scarred, reclamation led by Frank W. Preston, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and the state sealed mines and wells, regraded land, and established new vegetation. Opened in 1970, the park became a major recreation area and a notable example of large-scale environmental recovery.
