Erected on December 20, 1907 by the citizens of Jersey Shore and vicinity, this war memorial honors the soldiers and sailors of the Revolutionary War, the War with England of 1812–1814, the Mexican War of 1846–1848, the Civil War of 1861–1865, and the Spanish American War of 1898. Its column came from the State Capitol, which was erected in 1819–1821 and destroyed by fire on February 2, 1897, and it bears Abraham Lincoln’s words that these dead shall not have died in vain, that the nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
