James A. Verinis, associated with Bassingbourne, England, was best known as the co-pilot of the famous B-17 The Memphis Belle, immortalized in William Wylers' documentary film "Memphis Belle" in 1943, and in 1990 Warner Bros. in Hollywood made a full length movie also called "Memphis Belle." Verinis also flew as pilot of his own plane, "The Connecticut Yankee," for 20 missions. He took part in the first raid over Germany on January 27, 1943, was the first pilot or crewman to complete 25 missions over Germany and France, and flew his final mission on May 13th, 1943.
