The Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Minnesota is a 360-acre forest refuge operated by the American Bear Association. Located about two hours northwest of Duluth and about thirty minutes from Orr, it is especially known for the many black bears that visit regularly. This frequent bear activity makes it an uncommon place to observe black bears in a natural setting. The sanctuary’s importance lies not only in providing refuge for wildlife but also in advancing the American Bear Association’s mission to build public understanding of black bears and other wildlife through education, observation, and direct experience.
