White Tank Mountain Regional Park
Nature

White Tank Mountain Regional Park is Maricopa County’s largest regional park, protecting most of the White Tank Mountains and a broad expanse of Sonoran Desert in west-central Arizona. Established in the 1960s, it combines recreation with preservation through trails, campgrounds, picnic areas, and largely undeveloped wilderness. Its desert habitat supports diverse wildlife, while seasonal rains create temporary waterfalls and dangerous flash floods in narrow canyons. The park also preserves older human history, including Hohokam village sites and petroglyphs, some possibly far older. As suburban growth advances near Phoenix, the park has become an increasingly important refuge for open space, archaeology, and desert ecology.
