Chief Moses and many Indians from miles around gathered each summer at a great encampment three-quarters of a mile east on Rocky Ford Creek to gather food, trade, and race horses. During the Nez Perce War of 1877, Chief Joseph sent runners to Chief Moses's camp asking for help. The Military Wagon Road from Fort Walla Walla to Camp Chelan passed nearby. The Upper Ranch of Lord Blyth, an early-day cattleman, stood on the creek at the site of the Indian camp, and thousands of cattle grazed here in the 1800s. What was formerly the world's largest private fish hatchery was located four miles north of here. The area was settled in the early 1900s.
