The Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kakeath was established on Dec. 4, 1774. Its first divine service was held on Oct. 2, following its inception on Sept. 28. The first consistory included elders Cornelius Smith, Abraham DeBaun, Rynier Quackenbos, and Johannes Smith, and deacons Jacob Servant, Petrus DeMarest, Garret Smith, and Abraham Onderdonk. David Marinus was the first pastor. The first building was erected in 1778, the present building was dedicated on Jan. 20, 1858, and the official name was later changed to West New Hempstead.
