French Mountain is a 13,966-foot summit in Colorado’s Sawatch Range on the Elbert Massif, within San Isabel National Forest southwest of Leadville. Counted among the state’s “thirteeners,” it rises above exposed alpine terrain and helps form the broad, elevated ridgelines and prominent massifs that characterize this part of the Rocky Mountains. In the Köppen system, the mountain lies in an alpine subarctic climate zone, bringing cold, snowy winters, cool to warm summers, year-round precipitation, summer thunderstorms, and a drier period in late spring. The summit has also been known historically as French Peak.
