This cemetery and avenue are named for Colonel William Barrett Travis. The walls use brick from the chimneys of the home of Colonel James Butler Bonham; the brick originally came from England, and the chimneys were built more than 150 years ago. Travis and Bonham were both from Saluda County and were heroes of the Alamo. “Thermopylae had its messenger of death; the Alamo had none.”
