Nobscot Hill, a prominent height in Framingham and Sudbury, Massachusetts, is both a scenic destination and a layered historical landscape. Known to the Nipmuc by 1657 as Penobscot, meaning “Place of the Falling Rock,” it was regarded as a spiritual place and home to Tantamous, or Old Jethro, his son Peter Jethro, and others before their removal to Deer Island in 1675. The hill also preserves traces of later history, including Revolutionary War General John Nixon’s farm, a 1792 smallpox pest house and burial ground, Henry David Thoreau’s visit in the 1850s, and Henry Ford’s unsuccessful 1920s-1930s development plans. Today its trails connect extensive protected lands and notable viewpoints.
