James Mather

James Mather, an Englishman by birth, came to America in 1777, was active in the Indian trade in the West Florida area, and served as the fourth mayor of New Orleans from 1807 to 1812. He died here on October 8, 1821. The site was part of a large sugar plantation owned by the Mather family until it was sold in 1879.
