Whitehall Plantation, once owned by the Chew family, comprised more than 400 acres and was worked entirely by enslaved labor. Among the people enslaved there was Richard Allen, who was born at Whitehall and later founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church. By 1798, Benjamin Chew’s records show that he enslaved 42 men and women there, making Whitehall Delaware’s largest plantation worked by enslaved labor and Chew the state’s largest enslaver. Unwilling to free the people he held captive and accept a loss of profit, Chew sold Whitehall with the condition that the enslaved people be included in the sale. George Kennard bought Whitehall in 1803 and soon afterward freed the enslaved men and women.
