Wind Point Light stands at the north end of Racine Harbor in Wind Point, Wisconsin, as one of the oldest and tallest active lighthouses on the Great Lakes. It was built to solve a flaw in Racine Harbor’s first lighthouse, whose light was blocked for ships approaching from the north by Racine Point. Recommended in 1870, funded in 1877, and placed in service in 1880, the tower was designed by Orlando Metcalfe Poe. Its lighting technology changed from a kerosene lamp and Fresnel lens to electric light and later newer beacons. Maintained by the village since 1964, it remains an active navigational aid and preserved historic site.
