Dr. J. M. Shofner (1863-1926), the founder, dedicated his life to giving boys and girls a chance. Elisha Downing was a humanitarian, and the first building erected was named in honor of Mrs. Esther Downing. In 1906, the trustees were J. M. Shofner, D. Gillis, J. E. Finley, W. W. Hinote, J. M. Davidson, J. F. Jones, and James K. Kyser.
