Built in 1859 for Dr. George Glick, this historic Marshalltown house is one of the city’s early surviving homes and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993. Its story is linked to two important local families. Glick was an early founder and promoter of the community, and in 1870 he sold the house to George Sower’s family. Sower, a German immigrant, worked in newspapers and founded the Marshall Times, later the Marshalltown Times Republican. The property stayed in the Sower family until 1952, when Susie Sower gave it to Marshall County’s citizens, helping preserve it as a public historic site.
