Granite is an igneous rock known for being extremely durable and hard. In the early 1900's, this site was used to harvest granite for the main lodge's foundation and for entrance signs at the Polar Caves. Examples remain of places where the granite was broken using the technique of feather and wedges, a technique still used today when boulders are taken out of the caves.
