In late September 1862, a Civil War skirmish here between the forces of USA Gen. George W. Morgan and CSA Gen. John H. Morgan killed seven unnamed soldiers buried in this ground. During the Union retreat from Cumberland Gap to Greenup, Confederate forces harassed the Federals from West Liberty through here to Grayson.
