Feud violence in Rowan County reached its climax in the summer of 1887, when Logan and Hiram Pigman led a faction that surrounded Craig Tolliver and his men. The resulting shoot-out ended with the deaths of Tolliver and three others. The state militia was sent in three times to restore order, and a state report suggested that Rowan County be abolished.
