In August 1777, Gen. Herkimer took a 40 mile route from August 3-6 to relieve Fort Stanwix. On August 6, the Battle of Oriskany between Herkimer's men and St. Leger with his Indians became the turning point of the Revolution. Near this spot stood Fort Herkimer, built in 1756 around the second stone house of Johan Jost Herchheimer, father of Gen. Nicholas Herkimer. Nicholas Herkimer spent his boyhood here and rested here after returning wounded from the Battle of Oriskany.
