This site lay within the stockade of Fort Dayton, which stood on a slight eminence about one hundred yards farther north. Colonel Elias Dayton erected the fort in 1776, and it served as a military base during the Revolutionary War. In 1781 it became the most westerly stronghold for the colonies in the Mohawk Valley.
