At Fort Dayton near this site, General Nicholas Herkimer took command of the Tryon County Militia and on August 4, 1777 began a 40 mile march for the relief of Fort Stanwix. The route was taken from August 3-6, 1777, and ended in the Battle of Oriskany on August 6, where Herkimer's men fought St. Leger and his Indians. That battle was the turning point of the Revolution.
