Coquille River Light, near Bandon on the Oregon coast, was built to guide mariners across the dangerous shifting sandbars at the mouth of the Coquille River and into the harbor. Commissioned in 1895 and first lit in 1896, it used a fourth-order Fresnel lens and later replaced its unreliable Daboll trumpet with a fog siren in 1910. After a devastating 1936 wildfire and the decline of local shipping, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1939 and replaced by an automated light. Neglect and vandalism followed until restoration began in 1976. Preserved today, it recalls the era when coastal lights were vital to Oregon’s river ports and maritime trade.
