Jim and Nancy Gore devoted themselves to Upland, Indiana, through family, work, business, and community service. Nancy Gore, born in Upland to Donald and Kay Showalter, graduated from Jefferson High School and Taylor University and learned hard work and honesty while working at her family’s Showalter’s Grocery at 101 North Main Street, inspired by her father’s community service, compassion, and generosity. Jim Gore, born in Gas City to Marjorie and Lloyd Gore, graduated from Mississinewa as a standout track and field athlete, developed an early interest in working on cars, and built a career around serving customers well and going above and beyond. Married in 1959, they moved to Germany during Jim’s service in the US Army, where their first child, James Alan Gore, was born in 1960; after returning to Upland in 1963, their second son, Neal Gore, was born. Jim worked as a mechanic at Miller’s Ford and Nancy as an editor for the Upland Courier before they bought the Standard Oil dealership on Main Street in 1968 and operated its two-bay, four-pump station, with 24-hour towing and road service, until Jim retired in 1984. Nancy opened Stadium Sports in the former Showalter’s Grocery in 1975 and sold it in 1979, began working at Taylor University in 1983, and in 1985 the Gore family offered the back part of the former grocery at 101 North Main Street to support Helping Hand ministries. In 1993 the family opened Hoosier Home Arts and Crafts in the storefront, where more than 50 artists and craftsmen sold their goods, until it closed in 2001. Nancy retired from Taylor University in 2002. After Jim’s death in 2008, Nancy co-founded and began publishing SEG-way News in 2009 and continued publishing the weekly paper until her death in 2016, reflecting her love for Upland and her desire to inform and connect the community.
