Isaac Shelby, first and fifth governor, came to Kentucky as a surveyor in 1775. He claimed 1400 acres in 1776 by raising a crop of corn. In 1779 he received the first land settlement and premption deed granted by the Virginia Land Commission. His home, Traveler's Rest, was completed in 1786. Upon his death in 1826, he was the only settler living on his original Virginia land grant. The property was settled in 1776 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 by the United States Department of the Interior.
