Mount Rose
Nature
Mount Rose, in Nevada’s Carson Range between Lake Tahoe and Reno, is the highest mountain in Washoe County and Nevada’s highest and most prominent peak within the greater Sierra Nevada. An extinct volcano with an unusually subarctic climate for Nevada, it has long, snowy winters, short dry summers, and heavy snowfall that made it important for studying snow and weather. On June 29, 1905, Dr. James Edward Church established the Mount Rose Weather Observatory there, among the first high-altitude meteorological observatories in the United States. Research there produced the Mount Rose snow sampler, still used to measure snow water content.
