Mount Houghton is a prominent 10,490-foot summit in Nevada's Carson Range, within the Mount Rose Wilderness north of Lake Tahoe. It is the highest point of Relay Ridge, the second-highest peak in the wilderness, and the seventh-highest summit in the range. Rising sharply above Gray Creek and bordering the Tahoe Rim Trail, it stands among notable neighboring peaks including Relay Peak and Mount Rose. Its name was officially adopted in 1988 to honor University of Nevada, Reno geography professor Dr. John Greenleaf Houghton, who died in 1979 in the crash of Air New Zealand Flight 901 on Mount Erebus in Antarctica, where all 257 aboard were killed.
