Brasstown Bald, or Mt. Enotah, is the highest mountain in Georgia at 4,748 feet. Its Indian name, Itseyi, means “a place of fresh green,” referring to its grassy rather than timbered summit. Early white settlers mistook the Indian name for a similar one meaning brass. According to Cherokee legend, a great flood once killed all men except a few Cherokee families who landed atop Brasstown Bald in a giant canoe. The Great Spirit then killed all the trees on the mountain’s summit so the survivors could plant crops and live there until the floods subsided.
