Warren Woods State Park is a 311-acre preserve near Three Oaks in southwestern Michigan, named for industrialist Edward Kirk Warren, who began buying and protecting this land and nearby dunes in 1879 as an early private conservation effort. The park is most significant for preserving Michigan’s last climax beech-maple forest, including a 200-acre stand of virgin American beech and sugar maple with exceptionally large old trees. Its rare old-growth ecosystem led to designation as a National Natural Landmark in 1967. Also valued for research, birding, and quiet recreation, the park includes hiking trails and adjoins the University of Chicago’s Warren Woods Ecological Field Station.
