Gibraltar Mountain Wilderness is a protected desert area on the western edge of Arizona’s Buckskin Mountains, established in 1990 under the Arizona Desert Wilderness Act and managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Its terrain consists largely of volcanic tuff shaped by deep canyons and sandy washes. Gibraltar Mountain, the area’s namesake, rises to 1,568 feet but is not the wilderness’s highest point. The landscape supports desert vegetation such as creosote bush, cholla, barrel cactus, and palo verde, which in turn sustain a small population of desert bighorn sheep.
