At the University of Oregon in Eugene, this museum unites Oregon’s natural history and human history through research collections, exhibits, and public engagement. Its origins reach back to 1876, when geologist Thomas Condon brought a major fossil collection to the new university; anthropology became part of the institution in the 1930s under archaeologist Luther Cressman. The collections include nearly 100,000 fossils, nearly a million archaeological artifacts, the Fort Rock sandals, extensive ethnographic materials, and more than 1,500 Native American baskets. As Oregon’s official repository for archaeological and paleontological collections, it preserves and interprets the state’s deep past and living cultures.
