Hendricks Park, Eugene’s oldest city park, was established in 1906 from a donation by former mayor Thomas G. Hendricks and Martha A. Hendricks, along with additional land bought by the city. Covering 78 acres near the University of Oregon, it combines mature forest, a 12-acre rhododendron garden, a native plant garden, and trails used for hiking, jogging, and birding. The park’s later history centered on managing its aging urban forest, especially after concerns over hazardous trees in 1997 led to public debate, planning, and a forest management plan adopted in 2000. Ongoing stewardship by park staff and volunteers has helped sustain it as both a neighborhood retreat and botanical destination.
