This Methodist congregation traces its roots to Zion Church, established in 1826 in Laurens County during the expansion associated with the Second Great Awakening. In 1854, the congregation moved to West Main Street in Clinton, becoming one of the first churches to locate in town. The original structure there was destroyed by fire in 1880, and as membership grew, the church rebuilt twice on that site. By 1914, further growth required larger facilities, and property was purchased on North Broad Street. A brick neoclassical church designed by architect J.H. Casey was built there, and the congregation took the name Broad Street. In 1917, the church hosted the bishop and delegates of the Upper S.C. Methodist Conference. After 54 years of service, that church was replaced by a new sanctuary in 1970.
