Spencer was the birthplace of inventors William Howe, Elias Howe Jr., and Tyler Howe. William Howe developed the truss bridge in 1840, Elias Howe Jr. developed the sewing machine in 1846, and Tyler Howe developed the spring bed in 1855. The memorial was erected in 1909.
