On Aug. 31, 1864, the three divisions of Hardee’s A. C. [CS]—Lowrey’s, Brown’s, and Maney’s, under Gen. Cleburne—moved west from Jonesboro to attack the flank of the entrenched Federal 15th A. C. four hundred yards north, a movement requiring a wheel to the right, or north, timed to coincide with an assault by S. D. Lee’s A. C. on the Federals facing Jonesboro. Three of Lowrey’s brigades were diverted after encountering Kilpatrick’s dismounted cavalry [US] on this side of Flint River, and they drove it across the river and pursued it to the other side. Maney swung to the right to close the gap caused by Lowrey’s deflection, but Brown’s division had already been repulsed before Maney could align on its left.
