On Oct. 10, 1861, four miles east of here, in what was identified as the Civil War’s first Kentucky Federal death, a Union company slipped through a graveyard at night to arrest C.B. Hutcherson, a local Southern sympathizer. Ten poorly equipped recruits from the CSA camp of Gen. Joseph Lewis, sent to guard him, were attacked but defeated the enemy. The Federals fled with one dead and seven wounded, while the CSA suffered no loss.
