The Mount Zion Chapel of the Christian Church was built in 1872 on a hill beside the members' cemetery outside Clermontville on a two-acre parcel secured from the farm of William R. Clark, Sr. for church and cemetery purposes. It replaced the Boat Run Christian Church, organized in 1842 by a sect called the Christians, or the New Lights, whose first meeting house in Clermontville was dedicated on June 4, 1843 and was damaged by floods in 1871. Worship in the new frame church under the name Mount Zion Chapel began on October 6, 1872, and the church remains active today. Mount Zion Cemetery contains grave markers dating to the early 1800s, including those of Revolutionary War soldier Lt. Hugh Mulloy, who died in 1845, an unnamed Civil War soldier, and family plots of prominent Clermontville citizens such as the Parkers, founders of the private Parker Academy, also known as Clermont Academy, and the Fridmans. William Fridman wrote of the hilltop cemetery's view across the valley to the Kentucky hills beyond, calling it Peaceful Valley. Across the road, the one-room Lafayette School #6 was built in 1869 and now functions as a Fellowship Hall.
