On Foster Hill Road in West Brookfield, Massachusetts, this half-acre archaeological site preserves the location of the eighteenth-century home of Jedediah Foster, an influential central Massachusetts leader before and during the American Revolution. Built in 1735 by his father-in-law, Joseph Dwight, a prominent colonial military and public figure, the house became associated with Foster’s long public career. He served in the provincial assembly from 1761 to 1775, supported independence, and in 1779 sat on the select committee of the convention that drafted the Massachusetts State Constitution. The property stayed in the Foster family until 1902; after the house burned, only foundations and other remains endured.
