Christian Balsley, a Revolutionary War soldier, and his wife Anna Elizabeth Coiner founded the Balsley family of Virginia after coming from Pennsylvania in 1790 to settle in Sherando. Their graves, along with those of many members of their immediate family who died before 1870, are located about one mile southeast of Lyndhurst on the east side of Back Creek on the old Jackson Farm at the site of the old Methodist church. Although burial markers were removed after the Jacksons sold the land, the graves remained. Christian Balsley was born 1 May 1756 and died 22 June 1837, and Elizabeth Coiner was born 29 Apr 1760 and died 10 Nov 1844.
