Telescope Peak, known as Chiombe in Timbisha, is the highest point in Death Valley National Park and the summit of California’s Panamint Range. Its name reflects the exceptional distances visible from the top, where clear skies can reveal Mount Whitney and Charleston Peak more than 100 miles away. Rising 11,331 feet above sea level while nearby Badwater Basin lies 282 feet below it, the mountain shows one of the most dramatic elevation contrasts in the contiguous United States. It also supports high-elevation plant life, including pinyon, limber pine, and ancient bristlecone pines, and embodies the park’s striking compression of desert depths and alpine heights.
