Rogers Peak, a 9,991-foot mountain in California’s Panamint Range within Death Valley National Park, rises above an extreme contrast of terrain, standing 10,200 feet above Badwater Basin in only 12 miles. Its eastern and western slopes drain toward Death Valley and Panamint Valley through separate canyon systems. Formed of Precambrian-Cambrian limestone, it connects the Mojave Desert landscape to an ancient marine geologic past. The summit offers sweeping views of Death Valley and the eastern Sierra Nevada, including Badwater Basin and Mount Whitney. Named for John Haney Rogers of the stranded 1850 emigrant party later linked to the Death Valley ’49ers, it has also served government communications and instrumentation needs since the late 1950s.
