Roxborough State Park, a 3,339-acre protected landscape south of Denver, is renowned for dramatic red sandstone ridges, monoliths, and the 300-million-year-old Fountain Formation, whose slabs tilt at about 60 degrees. Established in 1975 and named a National Natural Landmark in 1980, it preserves rock layers from Precambrian to Late Mesozoic age, varied foothill terrain, and habitats ranging from forest and prairie to woodland. Creeks support diverse wildlife, including deer, elk, black bear, mountain lion, many birds, and numerous butterflies, moths, amphibians, and reptiles. The area is also significant for archaeological resources and remains a protected natural destination with trails linking to nearby public lands.
