In 1878, surveyor H.C. Woolman and illustrator T.F. Rose produced a detailed map of Manahawkin village for the Atlas of the New Jersey Coast. It shows Stafford Avenue, still the widest local road today, as the village's main street, reflecting Grier and Campbell's intention that it serve as the main road to Long Beach Island. The map also identifies some businesses, the churches, school, and cemetery, along with many family names still familiar in the area. It emphasizes the importance of the railroad, and the Toms River and Barnegat Railroad also planned travel to Long Beach Island by means of a railroad bridge north of Stafford Avenue.
